Initial Character Design

So this project me and Hannah have decided that we will both share the responsibility of designing the characters but that I will focus for now on getting the main character designed while she investigates with creepy ideas for the monsters that will live in the world through the door.

I sketched my designs on Paint Tool Sai, I knew roughly the elements I wanted this character to have, I liked the idea of him resembling an adventurer or someone who is self sufficient and ‘lives off the land’. Inspiration for this character came from a few places, I liked the design of ‘the kid’ from little nightmares and the childrens clothes in Made in Abyss.

I’m not entirely sure where my ideas came from for the backpack, I know in alot of horror games flashlights are a common thing, but I kinda liked the idea of him having a light up flower on his backpack.

At this point I’m still not sure exactly what style were going to do in terms of line and colour, we are animating in 2D but I don’t know if we want to go for a more clean look or sketchy, it will be something we need to experiment with abit more to find out.

Initial Storyboard

So this week I started to plan out a rough inital storyboard for me and Hannah, although we still need to figure out what exactly we want to happen in regards to when our character enters the other world, I was able to figure out some of the key scenes that we will need to have in the beginning world. For example me and Hannah concluded that we wanted to keep things creepy, so we will have our protagonist be happy and relaxed within the first world with background scenes etc. But we will use sound design for when the door (which will be what is used to teleport our character) randomly starts to appear. We want to use eery tones, giggling, whispers and other disturbing noises to really show a transition in mood and emotion. I liked the idea of the character being show doing things that he would probably do daily, like collecting berries and his house being in the background so you can get a sense of time and how long he has lived in this world for.

I liked this idea of the character already having a key kept under his hat, people tend to keep things like keys (if they are very important) on their person at all times and I liked this as a slightly questioning scene as to why he would have a key for something which is being portrayed to the audience as creepy and sinister.

Presentation

Below is the presentation I made for Helen showing her me and Hannah’s updated progress with the collaborative project.

After speaking to Helen she gave the constructive feedback that we should perhaps try and have the character stay in the ‘world above’ for a longer period of time before going through the door. This is something I am going to implicate when I create our final finishe storyboard.
