My Animation Design Goals

I want to create a beautiful animation inspired by the Masters in the industry, This includes Hayao Miyazaki, Mamuro Hosoda and many more
I want to design and digitally paint stunning surreal backgrounds, similar to the scenes done by Studio Ghibli and the creators of ‘Your name’.
I want to find a music track that will guide the viewers emotions in the right way and not be misleading to the message and narrative I want to be putting across.
I should keep my character and other characters rather simplified so they are easier to animate and therefore I’ll have more time to focus on the movement and quality of all the animated pieces. However saying that, I don’t want it completely simplified, my character will still be very ‘human’ in appearance and she will also include details such as her backpack, hair, objects that are personal to her.
I really want to focus on the fluidity of the animation, I really want to create a compelling animated piece where my main characters body movements, expressions and personality shine through her due to how she’s been animated.
I want to play with camera angles and panning/zoom. I’ve never created an animation where I’ve had the opportunity to put my own characters/world and play with the camera to suit my own unique content.

Miyazaki And Storytelling

And I believe this to be increasingly relevant, for example those of us who are Studio Ghibli fans will commonly use the phrase ‘You need to watch these films they will change your life’ to those who have never watched them. And yes, this is probably an exaggerated term but at the same time I think this seriously shows how powerful Miyazakis storytelling is to a huge audience of mixed ages groups, through narrative, and synchronisation between animation, dialogue and music. I will stand strongly behind this point due to the millions of people that are Studio Ghibli fans and the awe they have when they speak about his works, and from what I’ve managed to analyse of Miyazaki’s films I think I’ve managed to suss out the key points that lead to his success.
Miyazaki is able to communicate and come across clearly to many ages groups, He can control his message through a beautiful use of 2D animation and music so that whatever age you are you can atleast still enjoy the film for many of the components.
Narrative: A strong narrative is crucial to any good story, whether it be animated or a book, if the narrative is weak, the whole animation will be weakened in turn, and the message will be lost in translation.
I remember coming across a film called ‘Fireworks’, I had been listening to the song connected to it on youtube for a while and when watching the music video I was super excited to watch the animation. It was incredibly beautiful and I felt like due to the characters and their expressions, the colours and actions that this was going to be a film right up my street. However, when it came to researching up about this film I was left rather deflated to find that many people felt that the story was so flat, that the beauty of the animation became meaningless. I’m very aware that this has happened before in the film industry as well, and when it comes to people watching my animation, the last thing I want them to feel is disappointed or ‘let down’ by the narrative.

Development
This week I was aware that my presentation for Jon was coming up, I wasn’t completely comfortable or satisfied with where I had come up to with my work, irritatingly I let this negative feeling take over and didn’t present as I felt it wasn’t good enough. This is not the right mind set however I’m aware this can happen from time to time especially when I feel I can produce better work or haven’t managed my time properly therefore haven’t met a deadline. This is something I need to evaluate and figure out how I can avoid this happening and hopefully make a difference in my approach next term.
Strengths
Strengths this week may seem different or rather unusual but I think for me it was understanding how I function as an artist and a person, and how sometimes it’s ok to not be able to do something due to mentally not feeling amazing or other issues. But how I can make sure this doesn’t happen again. For example days when I was feeling fine, I should of put more work in to avoid being in a situation which doesn’t meet a professional deadline.
Areas for Development
Next week I am going to stay focused and really push myself positively to get work done that should have been completed for the week previously. Areas that I need to focus on are: My style frames, character design and start my animatic. Look into sound and music that could potentially be used in my final piece aswell.

Development
This week was quite a step forward, me and Hannah, who are good friends and also share a very similar creative style, concepts and sense of humour have decided to collaborate with eachother which is incredibly exciting and I think as a duo we will work well together and be able to motivate one another throughout the year. We also had our second collaboration preparation lecture with Helen and a guest called Gabriella Ditton who is a former Animation Student who had some really cool and clever advice for us as final years and soon to be graduates. Me and Hannah came up with some rough concepts and Ideas which we need to work on alot but was a nice starting point for the both of us and an exciting journey for us to go on.
Strengths
Working with a partner I get on with and who i see as someone with the skills, personality and simlarities to myself is a really great opportunity for us both to excel within this project and bring out all of our creativity and ideas knowing that someone else is going to be working alongside you to achieve the same goal.

Areas to Develop
So now that me and Hannah are set to work with eachother, we now need to organise ourselves around this project, meaning coming up with a more finalised idea, what sort of animation 2D style will suit the both of us and so on.
