Development
This week I have been primarily focusing on getting the scenes that I have chosen to be fully rendered coloured and shaded in Paint Tool Sai. I did consider not adding shading as I knew this would be rather time consuming and this week I have been rather concerned about getting everything finished. However I made the decision to add shading based on the brief stating that these 10 seconds are to demonstrate how we would envision the animated fable as a whole to look. So with this in mind I decided to add shading manually to each frame. My main focus this week has been tightening up my animation and colouring the scenes as well as creating a new background concept for scene 2 with the traditional Japanese styled temple in the background which I thought would add a little bit more charm and interest to the scene.
Strengths
This week my strengths have been focused on getting the animation for the rendering ready and coloured so that next week I can go into After Effects with all my PNG files of the layers of backgrounds and the PNG sequences of coloured animations so I can start layering and editing them altogether. This week has definitely been one that is very much a part of being a 2D animator, it’s not as thrilling as animating something and seeing it come to life but you still get excited when you see the colour version coming together.
Areas for Development
Next week and over christmas will be fully dedicated to finishing up on the colouring and checking my keyframes are working time wise and form wise before going into After Effects to start creating the final version of my animation.
Background layering

Change in timing
So this scene was one of my favourites to animate, I loved trying to reflect her personality and play around with different parts of the movement, such as hair, her T-shirt, facials movements and the arms.
Once I re-imported the scene back into TVPAINT I realised something was slightly off, I wasn’t keen on how fast the animation was. I decided to make two exports, one at 24frames per a second and one at 15. I asked a few people what they preferred and everyone agreed that the slowed down version was more realistic.
Script and Scene Directions
Once I felt like I had conducted enough research and I had made sure that Hannah had her designs finished with mine I was finally able to start work on the planning of our entire animation. I knew how I wanted to visualise each scene so I attempt to plan out the script and camera angles at the same time.
Overall I’m rather impressed with what I’ve been able to come up with, It wasn’t easy planning it on my own but I was aware it needed to get done and as director I took charge. Once I had finished with the script I forwarded it to Hannah to check she was happy with everything and as far as feedback went nothing was needed to be changed.
